According to the new act on labelling and registration, issued by the Austrian Ministry of Health (TKZVO-Novelle 2015, BGBl. II Nr. 193 from July 8 2015, https://www.ris.bka.gv.at/Dokumente/...015_II_193.pdf), the registration of domestic animals has now been expanded to honeybees. Everyone keeping honeybees (whether a person or a legal entity) has to inform the competent veterinary authorities and to register at a database provided by the national statistical service Statistik Austria (http://portal.statistik.at/). The information on honeybee registration issued by the statistical service (in German) can be found on http://www.statistik.at/ovis/imkerei/index.html.

The following data have to be reported to the authorities:

a) Core data of person/legal entity keeping bees: name, address, date of birth, contact details
b) (Geo-)Position of all apiaries within 7 days after establishing or ceasing the apiary.
c) Total number of beehives kept by person/legal entity on October 30 and April 31 of each year
Moreover, each apiary has to be permanently labelled at a clearly visible position with his personal registration number.

Reporting data a) is compulsory since 01.04.2016. Reporting data b) and c) will be compulsory from 01.01.2017 on.

The data can be entered by the beekeeper himself or by his local beekeeping club (in the case someone has no computer or doesn’t have access to the internet or is not able to manage the online tool provided by Statistik Austria).

There are – at least in theory – heavy fines of up to € 4.360 if someone does not meet his engagement.
